Core Facilities

In addition to faculty laboritories, The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences houses and maintains a number of instruments that all SEES faculty and their research students can access. The majority of instruments are located in the SEES Core Lab, D-223, with other larger instruments kept in dedicated labs throughout the department.

Renovations will be occuring in the E-Wing of the department beginning in January of 2021. This project will address currently underutilized lab spaces and create a more appropriate instructional and research facility within SEES and will include the addition of state-of-the-art equipment and research instrumentation. This renovation will add the following:

PerkinElmer Spectrum 100 FT-IR Spectrometer & Simultaneous Thermal Analyzer 6000:
Used to obtain an infrared spectrum of absorption or emission of solid samples


Shimadzu TOC-V: Total Organic Carbon Analyzer:
Measures the total carbon (TC), inorganic carbon (IC), and total organic carbon (TOC) in water

Muffle Furnace

Thermo Scientific Lindburg Blue M Muffle Furnace:
Determines what proportion of a sample is non-combustible and non-volatile

Plate Reader

BioTek Synergy H1 Hybrid Plate Reader:
Qualitative analysis of any biological assay via adjustable wavelength fluorescence intensity (FI), fluorescence polarization (FP), timeresolved fluorescence (TRF), luminescence, and UV-visible absorbance


Costech Instruments 4010 CHNS-O Elemental Combustion System:
Combustion analysis of total Nitrogen, Carbon, Hydrogen, Sulfur, or Oxygen in soil, sediments, plant material, and organic chemicals

FT-IR and Infrared Microscope

Thermo Nicolet Nexus 670 FT-IR & Continuum Microscope:
Used to obtain an infrared spectrum of absorption or emission of solid samples with microscope for enhanced IR microsampling


VWR AS12 Autoclave:
Decontamination and sterilization of glassware for processes that require precise testing, accepts up to three 2 L flasks

Water System

Millipore Milli-Q Direct 8 Water Purification System:
Production of pure (type 3) and ultrapure (type 1) water


Sartorious CP2P Microbalance:
Accurately weighing samples on the microgram scale


Hitachi S2600N Scanning Electron Microscope:
Imaging and compositional analysis of mineral samples


Phillips X’Pert X-Ray Diffraction Spectrometer:
Analysis of the atomic and molecular makeup of mineral samples


PerkinElmer Optima 5300 DV ICP-OES:
Qualitative analysis of minerals, soil, and trace elements in liquid samples (currently inoperable)
